Six milestone

Wuhu Yangtze River Bridge

Wuhu Yangtze River Bridge, which is a key project of “The 12th Five-year Plan”, , creates a precedent for the rail-cum-road cable-stayed bridges in China. The bridge owns 2-track railway and 4-lane highway, with the length of 5681.25m and 10520.71m respectively. And the main bridge is a extradosed cable-stayed bridge with a 312m main span.

14MnNbq developed by BRDI and relevant companies which represents the top-level of structural steel for domestic bridges was used in the bridge, together with the integral node technology. The bridge is a result of new structure, new technology and new material.

There are 14 records broken by the bridge in the bridge engineering of China. For example, it is a precedent for rail-cum-road bridge in China adopting large-span continuous steel truss cable-stayed structure. With a 312m main span, the bridge ranks the top among its type. It is the first extradosed rail-cum-road cable-stayed bridge in the world. The bridge owns the largest load design among rail-cum-road bridge in China, with the load ratio in railway and highway as 6:1, to satisfy the transport demand of high-speed railway. Low-carbon 14MnNbq newly developed by China was firstly used, making the yield strength higher than similar bridges in Japan and German. The development and application of new steel has perfected the bridge steel series for Chinese bridges. The above-water infrastructure of the bridge adopted 3m large-diameter drilled piles for the first time to overcome the difficulties in deepwater drilling, water movement and drilling in thick sands. The depth of the pile ranks top in China.

Many awards have been awarded to the bridge, such as Golden Prize for the National Quality Engineering Award, First Prize for the National Awards for Progress in Science and Technology, The Luban Prize for Construction Project, Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize and one of the Top 100 Classic Construction Projects by the 60 anniversary of the establishment of China.
