In the afternoon of October 10th, 2018, Dr. Xu Gongyi, Deputy Engineer of China Railway Major Bridge Reconnaissance & Design Institute Co., Ltd (BRDI) and National Design Master of China, was awarded the International Medal of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) at the Headquarters Hall of the ICE at 1 George Street, London. This is the second international award after he won the John A. Roebling Medal of the International Bridge Conference in June and he is the first Chinese to win this award.

 

 

The annual award of ICE is designed to honor those who have made outstanding achievements in civil engineering and contributed to relevant industries and institutions. This year, they awarded the only place of International Medal to Chinese. Dr. Xu Gongyi, 55, has been engaged in bridge design for 30 years. He has presided over the design of more than 50 grand bridges. He is the pioneer and leader of modern suspension bridge technology in China. Many achievements have won international prizes and State Science and Technology Awards of China. He is the chief designer of several super bridges, such as the Zhenjiang Wufengshan High Speed Railway and the Expressway Dual-purpose Suspension Bridge of Lianzhen Railway and Wuhan Yangsigang Double-deck Highway Suspension Bridge.

The ICE is a top international non-profit academic organization. It was founded in London in 1818. It is the oldest and most influential international academic organization in civil engineering area since its establishment 200 years ago. Its civil engineer qualification is protected by law in Commonwealth countries and widely recognized worldwide. Zhan Tianyou is the first licensed engineer of the ICE in the field of railway in China. Xu Gongyi is not only a senior licensed engineer, but also a fellow of the ICE.

 

Why do international awards often favor him? Xu Gongyi believes that this shows that the bridge technology in China is increasingly recognized by international colleagues and especially in the recent 20 years, the rapid development of China's civil engineering construction has provided a broad stage for Chinese bridge designers. "I am the lucky one." 
 

Xu Gongyi, National Registered Civil Engineer and Registered Consulting Engineer, Zhan Tianyou Railway Science and Technology Talents Award winner, Millions Of Talent national candidates, Chartered Engineer (CEng) and ICE Fellow. He was elected National Design Master in 2006 and won the first National Outstanding Engineer Award in 2014. He receives special allowance from the State Council. In 2015, he was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award of ICE in 2015. More than 80 academic papers have been published in international and national core journals, including more than 30 international papers and nearly 40 papers with important academic influence that have been searched internationally. The chief editors of the papers include Suspension Bridge Design, Cable-stayed Bridge chapter in Common Data Manual for Bridge Design, Macao Saiwan Bridge Design and Construction, Slab Stiffened Girder Suspension Bridge and 20th chapter in the new edition of International Bridge Engineering Handbook in the United States and other professional academic works. He has rich experience in foreign affairs and has participated in many overseas engineering practices and international academic activities.
